How to secure your PC - Online safety tips and tutorials

There are several steps you can follow to keep your PC safe while browsing the internet:

  • Keep the operating system and programs updated.
  • Use security tools besides conventional anti-virus.
  • Use a secure DNS instead of the one provided by ISP.

  • 1. Update the operating system

Microsoft constantly adds security and bug fixes to Windows OS. It is important to install the updates in a timely manner. The following video demonstrates Windows 7 updating process. Once you set it to update automatically, you do not have to worry about it in future.

    2. FileHippo App Manager - Software update monitor - [Download]

This program will warn you when newer versions of other programs are available. It is important to keep your programs up to date in order to close security holes. The program can be configured to run on startup and check for new updates. If nothing is found, it closes itself automatically and runs again during the next startup. If a new update is found it will show a notification on Taskbar.

    3. Install an Anti-Malware

Anti-Malware (known as anti-virus) is a program that provides a protection against different types of malicious programs. It is important to keep your anti-malware up to date so it can protect you against new malware. Allow me to recommend some free and paid ones. My recommendations are based on my personal experience with the software, the information gathered about the software from the software's internet forums, the information gathered from various anti-malware testing companies.

    Free

Avast Free - Medium protection. Easy to use but requires registration. No firewall.
AVG Free - Medium protection. Easy to use. No firewall.
Comodo Internet Security - Excellent protection. Not so easy to use. Comes with a built-in firewall
BitDefender Free Edition - Great online protection. Easy to use. No firewall.
Firewalls are highly recommended if you use your laptop on a public Wi-Fi network.

    Paid

    Norton Security
Pros: Excellent protection. Includes a firewall. The latest line of product from Norton. Can be installed on 5 devices(including mobile). Powerful cloud protection.
Cons: Users reported slow PC showdown times. Norton staff says they are working on a fix.
    Kaspersky Internet Security 2015
Pros: Excellent protection. Includes a firewall. Has a webcam protection. Powerful cloud protection.
Cons: Does not provide a full protection when you first power on the computer(tested on Windows 7). Has a known issue that prevents users from visiting sites that use encryption (Gmail,Outlook etc.). So far no announcement from Kaspersky staff about the fix.

    4. Block spyware keyloggers - Zemana Anti Logger - [Download]

Conventional Anti-Virus programs do not prevent keyloggers from stealing the data(passwords, email text,Credit Card numbers etc) that you type through keyboard. Therefor,I recommend using Zemana Anti-Keylogger next to your regular anti-virus. It will not create any conflicts and it's very lightweight. The free version provides anti-keylogger protection while the paid version acts as a cloud powered anti-malware.Both options provide a great protection.

    5. Malwarebytes Anti Exploit - [Download]

Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit is different from Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. You can think of Anti-Exploit as a program that closes unknown security holes that can be used to take over your system when you simply visit a website or read a document. This tool can be used next to your regular anti-virus and anti-keylogger programs. It is very lightweight.
